Description

This Amish Cinnamon Bread recipe delivers a soft, cake-like texture with a delightful cinnamon-sugar swirl and a satisfyingly crackly topping. It’s easy to make with pantry staples and perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9×5-inch loaf pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract. Mix until fully incorporated and smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon for the swirl.
  7. Spread half of the batter into the prepared loaf pans. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the batter.
  8. Layer the remaining batter on top, then sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the bread cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • You can substitute margarine or plant-based butter for a dairy-free option.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the cinnamon swirl.
  • This bread freezes well. Wrap cooled loaves tightly in plastic wrap and then foil.
