Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- If desired, divide the dough and tint portions with food coloring.
- Fill your cookie press with the dough.
- Press the dough onto ungreased baking sheets in desired shapes.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the buttery spritz cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Decorate as desired.
Notes
- For best results, use a manual cookie press with a sturdy metal barrel.
- If you don’t have a cookie press, you can roll the dough into small balls and flatten them, or use a piping bag with a star tip.
- You can substitute almond extract for vanilla extract for a different flavor profile.
- Store cooled buttery spritz cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
