Description

Create fun, spooky Halloween treats with this Jack-O-Cheese recipe. This festive grilled cheese sandwich features jack-o’-lantern faces carved into the bread, allowing gooey melted cheese to glow through, making it a perfect appetizer for parties or a delightful meal for kids.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of sandwich bread
  • 4 slices of cheddar or American cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of butter, softened
  • Optional: tomato soup or spooky dipping sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
  2. On two of the slices, carve jack-o’-lantern faces using a sharp knife or a small cookie cutter.
  3. Place two cheese slices on each of the uncut bread slices, then top with the carved slice, buttered side up.
  4. Heat your skillet over medium heat and carefully grill the sandwiches for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula.
  5. When the bread is golden brown and the cheese is oozing slightly through the face cutouts, they’re done.
  6. Serve your Jack-O-Cheese sandwiches hot and crispy with a bowl of tomato soup or a seasonal side.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, use whole grain bread or low-fat cheese.
  • Feel free to add a thin slice of tomato or sprinkle some Italian herbs inside for extra flavor.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days and reheated in a toaster oven or skillet.
  • Avoid cutting the face openings too large, as this can cause the cheese to leak out quickly.
  • Ensure you use enough cheese for optimal ooze and visual appeal.
  • Cook on medium heat to prevent burning the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Lightly press the sandwiches while cooking for better sealing and even browning.
