Description

A bright, tangy, and refreshing no-cook relish made with fresh cranberries and a whole orange. This vintage recipe is a timeless holiday classic, offering a perfect balance of sweet, tart, and citrus flavors to complement rich festive meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • 1 large seedless orange, washed and cut into chunks (skin included if thin-skinned, otherwise peel first)
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar, adjust to taste
  • Optional add-ins: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch, ½ cup diced apple for sweetness, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon for warmth

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Rinse fresh cranberries under cold water and drain well. Wash and chop the large seedless orange into small chunks, removing seeds if necessary.
  2. Process the mixture: Add the cranberries and orange pieces into a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped but not pureed, ensuring a chunky texture. Scrape down the sides as needed.
  3. Sweeten: Transfer the processed mixture to a mixing bowl and stir in the granulated sugar. Taste and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if it’s too tart.
  4. Chill: Cover the bowl tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve: Stir the Vintage Fresh Cranberry Orange Relish before serving. Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with orange zest or chopped nuts if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, use thin-skinned oranges or peel thicker-skinned varieties to avoid bitterness.
  • Do not over-process the ingredients; the relish should maintain a chunky consistency.
  • The flavors develop and improve as the relish chills, so making it 1–2 days in advance is recommended.
  • For a natural sweetener, consider using honey or maple syrup instead of granulated sugar.
  • This recipe makes approximately 2 ½ cups of relish.
