Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing
- ¼ cup butter, melted
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt.
- Add the activated yeast mixture, Greek yogurt, and olive oil to the flour mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Lightly grease a clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, prepare the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine melted butter and minced garlic. Stir in chopped cilantro or parsley, if using.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal portions.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll or stretch each portion into a roughly oval shape, about ¼ inch thick.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Cook each naan for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and puffed in spots.
- Brush the cooked naan generously with the garlic butter mixture.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- For a crispier garlic naan, cook over slightly higher heat.
- You can substitute whole wheat flour for half of the all-purpose flour for a nuttier flavor.
- This artisan garlic naan dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
- Leftover garlic naan can be reheated in a dry skillet or oven.
