Description

Learn how to make soft, fluffy artisan garlic naan bread with crispy edges using simple ingredients and a skillet. This easy recipe delivers restaurant-quality garlic naan at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt.
  3. Add the activated yeast mixture, Greek yogurt, and olive oil to the flour mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Lightly grease a clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough rises, prepare the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine melted butter and minced garlic. Stir in chopped cilantro or parsley, if using.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal portions.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll or stretch each portion into a roughly oval shape, about ¼ inch thick.
  9. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  10. Cook each naan for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and puffed in spots.
  11. Brush the cooked naan generously with the garlic butter mixture.
  12. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a crispier garlic naan, cook over slightly higher heat.
  • You can substitute whole wheat flour for half of the all-purpose flour for a nuttier flavor.
  • This artisan garlic naan dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Leftover garlic naan can be reheated in a dry skillet or oven.
